Careers in Fishing – Ash Prendergast

“I think everyone has to try this at least once. It will help you become stronger in ways land simply can’t”

Deckhand | Northern Prawn Fishery

“It’s funny because I don’t really like fishing or eating fish so it’s interesting that I ended up here.

I needed money and needed work. I had the option to either go fishing or go to the mines. I do love the ocean and the connection I have with it so I decided to go fishing.

The sunsets also helped guide me.”

“A normal day for me at sea is waking up
at about 3:30pm to start prepping dinner. Once dinner is cooked, I will go to bed and watch a movie and sometimes have a nap.

Then I wake up to do the first shot and process, then go to bed before second shot. After processing the second shot I go to bed. After the third short I usually stay up and have a coffee. Then I’ll cook brekky for the crew and either go tanning on the wheelhouse roof and chill out or go to bed if I’m tired.”

Highlights?

“Sunsets. They are the best in the world. And watching dolphins and marine life. Also being able to explore some of the isolated islands and checking out areas that people have never been to.”
