Seafood for Good Accelerator Finalists Selected for Launch

Seafood for Good is an Accelerator for startups and projects which fill the “trawler to table” gap for sustainable seafood.

It is run by sustainable fishing company Austral Fisheries and social impact accelerator StartSomeGood in partnership with Blue-X and the Ocean Impact Organisation.

After 12 weeks learning from some of the sharpest minds in startups and seafood in Australia, the five participating startups had to apply to go through into the next round, where they are supported to test their product through a crowdfunding campaign on StartSomeGood.

Finalist receive $25,000 non-equity funding from Austral Fisheries as well as their support as a supplier to launch their product, conditional on them pre-selling $25,000 worth of product in their 30-day crowdfunding campaign.

This approach leverages crowdfunding not only as a source of funds but as a source of validation of new business ideas, based on their ability to find and inspire people who want what they are offering.

StartSomeGood and Austral are proud to announce the two startups who will be launching on September 1: Farmer Meets Foodie and Seaweedery!

Farmer Meets Foodie:

Most seafood we buy we don’t know how or where it was harvested or by who. Farmer Meets Foodie are going to change this.

They will give you the ability to track your box of seafood as it leaves the trawler and arrives at your door.

Their crowdfunding campaign will test this concept in Northern Queensland.

As they say “We want to give Far Northern Foodies the full story of how this seafood is harvested and delivered in season, including details of minimal impact on by-catch, redesigned nets, turtle excluder devices and annual science surveys to monitor the status of the fishery.”

They expect to reduce the food miles by an amazing 3362 km per box.

Seaweedery:

Seaweedery have a mission to rescue flavours and nutrition lost, wasted or underutilized in the seafood supply chain — and they are starting with delicious prawn oil!

Their prawn oil will be made entirely out of the waste products from Austral Fisheries’ prawn catch — turning waste into an asset, improving sustainability and rescuing delicious flavours which would otherwise be lost!

You will have the chance to taste their prawn oil, along with their seaweed vinegar, by supporting their upcoming crowdfunding campaign.
