Northern Prawn Fishery Leads The Way On Sustainability

The Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF) has passed the latest Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainability audit with flying colours.

The fishery was given the MSC tick of approval in 2012 after being certified against their global environmental standard for sustainable and well managed fisheries.

Following initial approval, each year the MSC undertakes a surveillance audit to ensure the fishery continues to meet the MSC standards and to ensure the fishery is acting on conditions attached to the certification. The NPF recently went through its first audit and successfully fulfilled three of the four audit conditions three years ahead of time, and are on track to complete the final conditions over the next six months.

NPF Industry CEO Annie Jarrett says “the outcome is indicative of a sustainable and well managed fishery responding to favourable environmental conditions, which means plenty of tropical, wild caught prawns this summer, and for many years to come.”

Along with the successful MSC audit, Ms Jarrett advised that “this year we have had the best tiger prawn season in ten years, with catches expected to be in the order of 2000 tonnes.”
