Highlights: Austral’s second Cairns and Perth Coastal Clean Ups

After a couple of false starts due to inclement weather, our Perth team were finally able to follow the Cairns team’s lead from earlier in the year to complete its second coastal clean up!

In Perth, 24 participants collected up to 40kg of landfill waste from Leighton Beach across one hour. In Cairns, the team led the way and as you can see from the pictures, they once again had no problem getting their gloves dirty in the name of tidying up the town.

Some of Perth’s whackiest items picked up included a burnt suitcase, a pack of free range chicken still in the packet, and a fake eyelash!

As we did last year, we utilised the Clean Swell app – developed with the support of SeaBOS – which took care of categorising, counting, and weighing the rubbish for us.

Keep Australia Beautiful offered free volunteer insurance and the City of Fremantle kindly collected the waste for us.

Small initiatives like this are great conversation starters amongst our team, their families and friends to bring awareness to a big problem that needs everyone’s help to solve.

Winners of the ‘Least Co2 to Travel’ awards:
– Sam C, who cycled all the way to the site
– Shin, Dona and Grace, who caught public transport
– David, who drove his Tesla

Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time in Cairns and Perth and special mention to Heng for championing this initiative.
