In a world first, Hai Bao International (China), Sunkfa International (China), and Mark Foods Inc. (USA), have demonstrated their leadership in the seafood industry, by purchasing a type of fish that can help our planet – Carbon Neutral Fish.
In April this year, Austral Fisheries became the world’s first certified carbon neutral seafood business, offering their customers, and the end consumer, the chance to play their part in improving the planet by purchasing CN Fish.
Last week Austral offered its first ever carbon neutral unload (145MT) of their MSC certified Heard Island Toothfish for auction, with part proceeds going towards a Gold Standard native reforestation program in Western Australia. Austral will plant around 190,000 trees annually to offset their 27,000t of greenhouse gas emissions, which were calculated, audited and certified under the Australian Government Carbon Neutral Program.
Austral CEO David Carter said, “We are very proud to be able to offer our customers the world’s first CN fish. We are looking forward to now working with our supply chain partners and customers to help them find benefits in working in a low carbon economy.” He went on to say, “The Australian landscape is iconic, and our marine environment vast. It makes sense for us to look after both land and sea, it’s the responsible thing to do”.
Mark Foods Inc. won the USA-bound allotment, with Managing Director, Barry Markman saying, “I have been purchasing Austral’s toothfish for several years, and so I am very excited about being able to market the world’s first CN fish. Austral have a great story to tell, and I look forward to sharing it with my customers here in the US.”
Sunkfa International’s President, Weng Shengsheng, said “It is an honour to win the world’s first unload of carbon neutral toothfish, we are excited to offer our own customers this product and play our part for the environment.”
Jane Xue, from Hai Bao International, had similar sentiments, “We appreciate Austral Fisheries’ efforts to make the world a better place.”
The Carbon Neutral toothfish auction was independently facilitated by Ernst & Young Australia. The load was split into three consignments based on size. In total 29 companies from 12 countries were given the opportunity to bid.
