DNA Zoo: Mapping the Genome of Every Living Species with Dr Parwinder Kaur

Austral Fisheries were delighted to welcome Dr Parwinder Kaur, a world leader in genomic research and a key player in the ‘DNA Zoo’ project. Dr Parwinder and DNA Zoo are on a remarkable quest to map the genome of every living thing.

“Assoc. Prof. Parwinder Kaur leads an innovative Translational Genomics research program that aims to translate fundamental science into ready-to-use solutions across the agricultural and medical sectors. Her DNA Lab team enables research to span the spectrum of scientific activities beyond the traditional ‘Lab-to-Landscape’ model, using new age technologies such as CRISPR, single-cell and 3D genomics.

With DNA Zoo Australia she is on a mission to provide genomic empowerment to unique Australian biodiversity facilitating conservation efforts for the threatened and endangered species.”

DNA Zoo have mapped just over 270 species and their technology is already producing fascinating results – simultanouesly revealing how unique yet interconnected every living being is.

Perth and surrounds is the perfect place to start given our proximity to the vast and complex biodiversity found within the Western Australia’s southern regions (a world renowned biodiversity hot spot). WA is also home to the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre which is providing the processing power to make sense of enourmous amounts of data.

Dr Parwinder presented a snapshot of her work and journey so far to the Perth-based Austral team who were blown away by the scope of her work with the University of Western Australia and its students.

We look forward to assisting DNA Zoo with their work by supplying tissue samples from as many species as we can access during the normal course of our fishing operations.
