PRESS RELEASE
A WORLD FIRST: Award-winning, Glacier 51 Toothfish fillet by Austral Fisheries has been Certified ‘sustainable’ by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and rated ‘Best Choice’ by the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program®
Patagonian Toothfish (Chilean Seabass) is back on the menu! Prior to launching Glacier 51 Toothfish in Australia in May 2013, website searches globally on ‘toothfish’ revealed pages of negative stories claiming the fish to be endangered or illegally caught. Today, internet searches on ‘toothfish’ reveal pages of positive news stories on sustainability, recipe ideas and five-star restaurant reviews – thanks largely to the marketing and branding of Glacier 51 Toothfish.
“There are many companies doing the right thing by the resource and it was time to put a stop to being the poor behavior of a few impacting on the extraordinary efforts of many. Things have changed, with now 50% of all toothfish globally being certified as sustainable by the MSC, as well as over 60% rated as Best Choice or Good Alternative by Seafood Watch” said Dylan Skinns, Sales & Marketing Manager at Austral Fisheries. “It was great to be recognised for the hard work Austral Fisheries has put into global toothfish fisheries management with our 2013 Australian Seafood Industry Promotion Award, and it’s now very rewarding to see the support of so many chefs around the world putting our sustainable Glacier 51 Toothfish back on the menu”.
Austral Fisheries credits this success to its solid end-user research campaign conducted in early 2013. Mr. Skinns went on to say, “Our research shows that large corporate companies and ultimately our consumers are seeking reliable third party endorsement of sustainable seafood with an ocean-to-plate story”. Glacier 51 toothfish was kitchen tested by over 40 world leading chefs including Nobu 57 legendary chef Nobu Matsuhisa before going to market to ensure we had a successful product launch”. Over 1,200 restaurants in Australia were approached with the Glacier 51 Toothfish story and now its America’s turn – Australian sustainable seafood with a story that sells.
