With the launch of the Austral Academy, we’ve begun a schools and career expo outreach program which has seen members from our team attend the Academy’s first two schools, Governor Stirling Senior High School and John Tonkin college.
Governor Stirling SHS
Lesley, Dylan, Heng, Sam, and Ashley from our Perth team spent a morning at Governor Stirling’s Careers Day on the 28th June.
Armed with a slide deck, some merchandise to giveaway and a combined 60+ years of experience in the fishing industry, the team shared a bit about each of their respective roles at Austral, life in the fishing industry, and the countless (but mostly unknown) career opportunities available to two classes of approximately 25 students each.
John Tonkin College
A few weeks after our Governor Stirling visit, this time it was south of the river for Dylan, Rhys and Vinko, who spoke to John Tonkin’s Year 9 ‘Surf Science’ group on the 22nd July.
Some of the more memorable questions from the kids included:
When you are on the fishing boat, what happens when there is a Tsunami?
Has anyone been eaten by a shark before?
Do the boats have wi-fi?
Along with answering these great questions, the team spoke about Austral Fisheries and its three operations; what it’s like to work at sea, and the many and varied opportunities available to them if they were interested in pursuing a career in fishing and seafood.
John Tonkin’s Surf Science program has a heavy focus on marine science and all things oceans, so the kids were engaged and curious!
The fishing industry isn’t typically promoted to high school students considering their career options so it was great to be able to share a whole new world with these students.
The Austral Academy is gaining momentum and we’re excited to offer an alternative career development pathway for young people who can see a future for themselves in the fishing industry.

The Austral Academy looks to provide students with at sea opportunities, as well as mentoring by qualified General Managers with varying backgrounds in front-line fishing operations, sales and marketing, finance, and project management during their final years of schooling.
