From the serene NSW countryside to tropical Cairns, the Austral Academy team headed up north to go fishing for future talent.
Tasked with not only getting 90+ crew ready for the biggest Banana prawn season in a long time, but the team also managed visits to two local high schools: Redlynch High School and Smithfield State High School in what marked our first Austral Academy activities in Queensland.
The team presented an overview of Austral’s operations in the Northern Prawn Fishery including conversations about the importance of bycatch and bycatch reduction devices, MSC certification, carbon neutral certification and sustainable fishing practices as responsible stewards of our oceans. Already equipped with some knowledge about marine science and aquatic practice related concepts, students were able to see their classroom learnings in action at an industry level, further understand the scale of the commercial fishing industry in Cairns and expand their awareness of the many possible career pathways available in the fishing industry.

“Students were very familiar with the local fishing hot spots, sustainability, ocean conservation, weather systems and knew of someone who is or was a commercial fisher, however they never considered a career in the industry nor understood the extent of the commercial fishing operations happening in their backyard (Northern Prawn Fishery). So it was exciting to introduce them to the fishery and help them connect the dots between what they have learned in class so far and how those theories translate in to real life” said Ashley, HR Officer.
Joining the team for his first Austral Academy event was Andy Prendergast, General Manager- Northern Prawn Fishery.

“Many students were very engaged and engaging. It was clear that some came from commercial fishing families whilst others had an interest in the sustainability of the fishery. I found it exciting to meet people that could be running our business one day that we wouldn’t have come across if it wasn’t for the Austral Academy.”
The sessions brought about many great, inquisitive questions from teachers and students.

“I definitely think they’ll be a couple that apply. I really enjoyed it as well, so good to learn more about the industry. Would be keen to organise for the year 11s once your crazy banana season has calmed down. Thanks again!” – Marine Science/ Aquatic Practices Teacher @ Smithfield State High School.
Through educational incursions like these, the Austral Academy seeks to attract young people to the fishing industry by educating students about commercial fishing operations, providing invaluable mentoring opportunities from experienced general managers, support to complete the required seagoing certificates, and work placement opportunities.
